For years, the modern man was told the same thing.
Slim it down. Taper the leg. Crop the ankle. Keep it tight.
The result was a generation of suits cut close to the body, narrow through the thigh, cropped above the shoe, and aggressively tailored to prove sharpness.
And for a while, that look dominated. But if you’ve been paying attention to the red carpets lately, that tailoring method is no longer true in the big 26.
The pants aren’t suffocating the body and jackets aren’t pulling at the button anymore. There’s more room.
Not mistaken with oversized, but just more fitted in a flattering way.
And the men who get it aren’t just throwing on wider trousers for the trend. They understand how proportions work.
They know when the leg can widen, when the jacket needs to relax a bit, when the whole look needs space to breathe without looking sloppy.
The most noticeable change is happening below the waist. Instead of skin-tight tapering, we are seeing wider leg openings, subtle flares, and higher rises.
Sometimes you can see there’s a little extra width that covers more of the shoe. When they walk, the fabric actually moves instead of pulling across the thigh.
And here’s what’s interesting… it doesn’t make them look bigger. If anything, it makes them look longer.
The waist still looks clean, but the leg isn’t fighting for air.
That’s really what makes it work. You have to be comfortable taking up a bit more space and not relying on “skinny” to prove you’re put together.
As trousers widen, jackets have quietly recalibrated to keep the silhouette balanced.
We are seeing slightly shorter jacket lengths, a touch more room through the body, and shoulders that still feel structured.
As trousers widen, jackets have quietly recalibrated to keep the silhouette intentional.
In some cases, that recalibration shows up as a slightly shorter jacket with a cleaner waistline.
In other cases, particularly on fashion-forward celebrities, it appears as a controlled oversize.
Saint Laurent F/W Ready To Wear 2026
We are seeing jackets that are boxier through the shoulder, roomier through the body, or uniquely structured to create shape without clinging.
The key difference is that this is not careless bagginess.
When done correctly, even an oversized jacket is engineered to flatter the waist, either through subtle tapering, strategic button placement, or proportion play with higher-waisted trousers.
And if we’re being honest, this feels like a natural progression. Fashion always overcorrects.
We went from boxy 90s suits to razor-slim everything, and now the pendulum is settling somewhere smarter. Not extremes or theatrics. Just some added balance.
The modern suit isn’t trying to tell us “look how tailored I am.” It’s about proportion and understanding your frame.
When the fit is right, you don’t need the ankle crop to prove you’re stylish. You don’t need skin-tight tapering to look sharp.
And the men who are ahead of this aren’t chasing nostalgia or trends, they’re dressing for longevity.
A fuller leg with a clean waist will age better than anything aggressively slim ever could.
The 2025 New York Super Trunk Show: Goodyear-Welted Greatness!
By Yacoub Soumahoro
India. China. Vietnam. Trinidad & Tobago. Singapore. The United States.
Reading off that list of countries in one paragraph would immediately bring to mind a UN General Assembly Conference.
But these represent but a handful of the countries where the fine, Goodyear and Hand-Welted shoes on display at the 3rd Annual NY Super Trunk Show last October were crafted.
With brands such as BlckBrd Shoemakers and Bridlen (based in India), Cru Nonpareil (based in Trinidad & Tobago), Cnes (based in Singapore), Caswell & Co., and many others, the NY Super Trunk Show - as well as the global Trunk Shows under the same moniker - has in recent years been known as THE venue where various shoe brands from all over the world, in addition to those enthusiasts who are truly “In the Know” about the best men’s Goodyear and Hand Welted shoes on the market, come together in Midtown Manhattan.
Kirby Allison (IG: @kirbyallison) hosting the “U.S. Championships of Shoe Shining” event
Not only did the Show bring together the best shoemakers in the world, it also featured competitions wherein professionals in other parts of the men’s footwear community could test their mettle and show off their skills: Specifically the U.S. Championships of Patina making and Shoe shining.
The 3 winners of the 205 U.S. Championships of Shoe Shining
The amount of skill, dedication, and raw talent required to prevail in both of the aforementioned Championships would convince one that they should be officially recognized as Olympic Sports! (And if that does end up happening, you read it here first!)
One aspect of the Show that was new this year was a shoe card session hosted by Preston Soto of “The Elegant Oxford” (IG: @theelegantoxford) where he provided an overview on proper suede care, repairing a mirror gloss shine, and how to remove salt stains.
It was all in all another successful Trunk Show. The 2026 Edition should take things to even greater heights!
