Why Do Most Men’s Closets Look Like a Random Sale Rack?

By Sarena Sambo

The last time I took a trip home, I stayed at my family's house for about two weeks, and I came across my brother's closet.

While looking at this closet, it dawned on me that most men's closets look like they just got hit by a tornado.

There’s a faded high school tee next to a $100 button down.

One half-decent dress shirt and about five solid short sleeves that get worn on rotation every single week.

No suit in sight unless you count that hand-me-down from 2017.

Truth be told, it does not look slightly chaotic to them because either men do not care, or they were never taught how a wardrobe is supposed to function.

Although, both may be the case for 90% of men with these closets.

Clothes are usually collected, not built.

A shirt gets bought for one event.

A jacket gets purchased because it was on sale.

A pair of shoes shows up because someone said they were versatile.

Over time, the closet becomes a storage unit of random decisions instead of a system designed with confidence.

Nothing technically looks terrible on its own.

It just does not work together.

There can also be emotion involved, that old shirt from college might not fit the same, but it carries good memories.

That one blazer feels important because it was expensive.

So instead of change, most men just keep adding.

The closet gets fuller, but never better which creates a rotation problem.

A lot of guys actually own a few really good pieces.

Maybe five shirts that fit well and one solid pair of trousers.

Those pieces become the weekly uniform because they feel like it's the best, or sometimes, only option.

Everything else sits untouched.

The issue is not a lack of good taste, it's the absence of depth.

There are not enough foundational pieces to create options, so the same combinations repeat.

Another quiet issue is that most men think in items, not outfits.

They buy a shirt, they buy shoes, they buy a jacket.

But they rarely ask, what does this connect to?

When you do not build with combinations in mind, you end up with great standalone pieces that never fully come together.

Let’s talk about the suit.

Two weeks ago, I asked you a simple question: are you still wearing suits that are too tight?

And I meant it.

Because this is not just about tailoring trends or what is currently cycling through Instagram.

Some men do not own one because they believe they rarely need it.

Others have one hanging in the back of the closet that fits like a photograph from a decade ago.

A well-fitting suit prepares you for having something in your wardrobe that rises to the moment when you need it to.

A suit should frame you, not squeeze you and it should move when you move and sit cleanly on your shoulders.

When it fits correctly, you just found a hack to upgrade your style.

The good news is that fixing a closet is not about throwing everything out and starting over, it is about creating structure.

A clean white tee, a few elevated button downs, trousers that actually fit your current body, a suit that makes you stand taller, practical accessories, polished shoes.

Once the foundation is there, not only did you just upgrade your closet for the better, but everything else becomes easier.

If your closet feels scattered, it is not a character flaw; it just means no one ever helped you make the right wardrobe changes.

If you are tired of rotating the same five shirts and hoping they carry you through every occasion, it might be time for a reset.

So next time when you're out shopping, keep in mind that you probably do not need more clothes; you need a bit of direction.

And if you're still fashion confused, don't be shy. Book a consultation with NYFG! (My boss did not tell me to write this. Honest.)
