What Can Colman Domingo Teach Us About Fashion?đź‘”
Colman Domingo is known for his talent on the stage, on the screen, and even on the red carpet.
Every Met Gala he attends sparks conversations about his outfit, and while Met Gala reviewers are somewhat judge-y, it is hard to find anything negative to say about his looks throughout the years, but why is that?

Even before his three-year long Met Gala run, Domingo has always had a unique suit at his disposal, setting the tone for the future of his red carpet appearances.
Most celebrity men show up to premiers in a simple black suit, a tuxedo if they want to stand out a bit more. However, Domingo introduces himself with interesting silhouettes and flashy hues.

Ten years later, Colman Domingo sticks to his classic creme and black scheme, even adding a similar drape over his shoulders. What differs is how he elevates the look; the jewelry, the wide leg, the extra fabric on the collar, even the flowers take his simple look above and beyond.
He kept the outfit on theme (Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion) by taking an old look and adding to it with new fabrics, accessories, and even makeup (another bold step).
With this look, Domingo lets us know you do not have to completely reinvent your style, just elevate it.

It is 2025 and Colman Domingo comes in a royal blue robe to the carpet, revealing the same creme and black underneath, however with a pattern and a flower (yet again) that ties into the dapper theme of the year.
The dress code of that year (Tailored for You) was one that required men to show up and show out in their most well fitted, and unique, suits. Many opted for the traditional cuts, adding a pop of color for personality. Others tied it back to their cultural roots.
A well done outfit often is a mixture of fashions from your idols and your own style and Coleman Domingo shows us just that.

Costume Art was the theme for 2026 along with “Fashion is Art” being the dress code for the carpet. Colman Domingo took inspiration from Jean-Michel Basquiat to create a colorful checkered look.
This time, he does not do anything crazy with the silhouettes, letting the colors speak for themselves, which opposes what he did in 2024.
At this point, he’s established himself as a fashion icon and takes a more experimental route when it comes to color and clothing, continuing to be right on theme.
While this look is not for the everyday, he depicts very well the artistry that goes into fashion as the entire top half took 400 hours to meticulously weave. The brightness of the outfit says enough, though learning about the process makes the message “Fashion is Art” even more apparent.

Here’s what we can take away from Coleman Domingo’s flashy carpet looks:
Elevate. Add accessories, choose new fabrics, look back at old outfits and incorporate something new.
Something old, something new. What did your dad, uncle, even older cousin, wear that made you look up to them? Try it out for yourself with some of your own pieces.
Artistry. Even something simple such as a shirt and pants is still fashion meaning it is art. Remember that what you're wearing should display your creativity and imagination.
