What Do I Wear On My Feet?

What’s on your feet matters. Whether your outfit is black tie or smart-casual, your shoes should help bring your outfit together.

There are about four staple shoes you need in your rotation to ensure your shoe game is always on point.

The Sneaker.

This pair of shoes should be comfortable, stylish, and not stand out too much. A staple pair of sneakers can work with jeans, shorts, cargos, or any casual outfit.

Also, keep it simple. Since these shoes will be what you wear most of the time, there’s no need to go all out and buy Golden Goose or Balenciaga. As long as they match your overall style, they will look good.

Finally, these shoes, all of them, really, should be kept clean. Every once and while take a toothbrush, soap, and water to keep them looking fresh.

The Oxford.

These are the shoes that let people know you’re serious. If a collared shirt is a part of the outfit, oxfords should be as well.

Oxfords are the perfect shoes for a day at the office or a night out on a date. Whoever is sitting across from you at the table, whether it’s for meetings or dinner, will appreciate the effort to elevate your look.

Getting a fresh pair of oxfords does require a short break-in period, but it’s worth it in the end, so it’s important to find some that have the right fit whether you need the wide, narrow, or regular silhouette.

An alternative is the derby shoe though it is important to note that these are much more casual. Yes, they can be worn for a quick meeting, but when you have to present yourself and stand out, oxfords are the way to go.

The Loafer.

These shoes are controversial, but a good staple nonetheless. They tend to sit in the middle of the casual to formal spectrum.

Loafers are an easy way to elevate a casual outfit and they look great paired with a more eye-catching suit or sweater. There are also a multitude of loafer styles and you can choose whether you want to be taller with a platform sole, flashier with a gold buckle, or stick to the fundamentals with a black leather band across the top.

Celebrities such as Tyler the Creator and A$AP Rocky typically wear these so, if that is the look you're going for, brighter colors and stand out patterns, loafers are the shoes for you.

The Boot.

As the temperature drops, boots are an important addition to your closet for the upcoming fall and winter months, and there are a few options.

The plain toe boot is a lace up and goes with a sleek and minimalist look and lies between the next to boots mentioned. Again, these are shoes that pair well with either jeans or slacks, making them very versatile.

Next is the combat boot which is perfect for a casual fall outfit and can replace your everyday sneaker in the winter months. If you are the type who likes a lot of workwear style clothing, a pair of combat boots is a must.

Lastly, the Chelsea boot is perfect when it is too cold for oxfords, but you still need to dress up. A simple black pair of these shoes will keep your outfit professional and refined.

Having a pair of sneakers, oxfords (or derby shoes), loafers, and boots ensures that during anything you have planned, you look superb.
